Key EU Political Parties
European People's Party (EPP)
A centre-right party founded in 1976 it is the largest group in the European parliament with 271 MEP members. Its members include the French Union for a Popular Movment (UMP) of Nicolas Sarkozy and the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Angela Merkel. The current president Wilfried Martens is the former Prime Minister of Belgium.

Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D)
Hannes Swoboda - Leader of the S&D
The S&D are the second largest party in the European Parliament with 183 MEP members. It's national party members include the French Socialists of Francois Hollande and the German Social Democrat Party (SDP).
Policies
- More effective European economic coordination and crisis management: specifically that the European Stability Agency should be empowered to issue Eurobonds.
- Reform to tackle problems in the size, structure, business models, fiscal and regulatory arbitrage and remuneration patterns of financial sector institutions.
- The introduction of a Financial Transfer Tax on banks
- Directives on workers rights and social services.
- A revision of the Multi-Annual Financial Framework to equip the EU to react promptly to new challenges.

Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE)
Guy Verhofstadt - Leader of the ALDE
Party of the Liberal Democrats in the UK, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Germany, and the Democratic Movement in France. The current leader is former Prime Minister of Belgium Guy Verhofstadt who was elected to the European Parliament in June 2009.
