Government published figures show that the recycling service introduced last year by the Lib Dems has made Bournemouth one of the most improved Councils in England.

The big bin/little bin service plus the town's first garden waste kerbside collection was introduced in September 2006: the figures are for May 2006 to April 2007. Even better figures are expected when after April 2007 when the service has been running for a whole year.

Bournemouth has

  • The fourth most improved recycling and composting rate in England: up 16.3 per cent on the previous year.

  • An overall recycling/composting rate of 36.3 per cent for 2006/7.

  • The second highest reduction in refuse by a unitary authority: a 19 per cent reduction in refuse ('little bin') collected.

Residents in Bournemouth have made the comprehensive new service a success: as well as being less wasteful, the improved recycling means that the Council will have to pay less out on landfilling rubbish.
